Programme of Volunteer Correspondents
“Someone, somewhere, has asked to write to a stranger. You are the stranger.”
The Programme of Volunteer Correspondents is an institution devoted to keeping alive the old practice of letter writing.
We are not looking for instant messages, nor for fleeting exchanges. We believe that one awaited, necessary letter is worth more than a thousand immediate replies. Our task is simple: through a sober and discreet selection process, we will pair you with a person who has asked for a correspondent. They may live far away, in some form of isolation, or simply feel the need to entrust to paper — however virtual — thoughts that would find no room elsewhere.
The shape of the exchange
Once enrolled, you will be matched with a sender. They will write to you first: a long letter, dated and signed. From that moment, the exchange begins.
The Programme does not promise endless company, but the building of a genuine relationship, limited in time and preserved in form. Are you ready to write?
Enrolment takes only a few minutes of attention. We ask you to fill in our membership form: we will collect only the information needed to make the match meaningful and your letters worthwhile.
